Healthcare construction services: live hospital environments
Health Spaces has recently provided healthcare construction services to North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.
Building a new Urgent Treatment Centre and a Paediatric Assessment Unit, this modular healthcare construction build was time-sensitive to ensure that Peterborough City Hospital could continue to provide a quality level of emergency care for the community. During this project, it was critical to ensure that patients were not affected by the hospital construction work taking place.
Healthcare builds: the challenges
The format of Peterborough City Hospital and location of the build required us to lift modules over a live hospital space and into an atrium. This construction task involved a 450 tonne crane lift, dropping six units into place – twice – creating 12 units of modular buildings.
Our hospital construction project with Peterborough City Hospital was a time sensitive build due to the urgent clinical need – the Trust required both an extension to Peterborough’s children’s ward and a urgent treatment centre.
This project demonstrated our ability to work under considerable time constrains and to develop a bespoke design programme that can overcome key challenges to best utilise space.
Utilising space to create capacity
Working on a live environment always requires up-to-the-minute communication and careful attention to detail. This particular hospital construction service was no different – dropping units over a live hospital demanded planning every step with meticulous detail.
Working closely with Peterborough City Hospital’s site management and health and safety teams, we were able to access the site with minimal disruption to the Trust’s operations. The modular units were delivered by articulated HGV vehicles, and unloaded using mobile craneage which was coordinated with the Trust’s site management.
Deliveries were managed as ‘Just in Time’ deliveries and we engaged with the Trust at all times to ensure for minimal disruption to the hospital’s operations and day-to-day processes.
Good patient experience
Increasing patient flow, reducing the patient backlog and overall improving patient experience – these are our shared goals, and goals we work to as a team on every Health Spaces construction project.
They key goals here were to create additional capacity and additional space to improve patient experience.
Kelvin Moulding, Health Spaces: “Our modular construction services for Peterborough City Hospital has been a rewarding result of careful planning and close collaboration. The lift and build finished well ahead of schedule and with all stakeholders very pleased with the progress.”
