Last week we were honoured to join Newham Hospital in celebrating the official opening of the new state-of-the-art intensive care unit and respiratory ward.
Among those who came to celebrate included local MPs Uma Kumaran and James Asser, along with patient representatives, councillors, colleagues from across the Trust, and artist Erin Hughes who was commissioned by Barts Charity to create artwork for the spaces.
Guests heard from Chief Executive Simon Ashton on how much this investment means for our community, and there were two ribbon cuttings on each ward with members of staff. One of which was Carol Calder, who has supported the intensive care teams since 1994, celebrating 30years of service.
The event was an opportunity to celebrate with everyone who was part of the journey, from the staff who were involved in designing the new spaces, to the patients who co-created the artwork. The build will provide the flexibility needed to adapt to and meet the needs of the community’s growing population.
Simon Ashton said:
“This marks the beginning of a better place to work for our staff and a better place to care for our patients. We now have a purpose-built, modern space that is a huge improvement from our previous environment, making it easier for our teams to carry on their critical work and give patients in Newham a better experience all round.”
Speaking after the visit, Uma Kumaran MP shared:
“A really wonderful day with the staff & patients at Newham Hospital, honoured to have joined them for the opening of their brand new respiratory ward and intensive care units. The staff and teams are the beating heart of our NHS – thank you”
“[This is] a great new facility for Newham, much better facilities for staff to work in and a real benefit to patients and their visitors.” – James Asser MP.
