Mental Health & Wellbeing Environments

Our work focuses on designing and delivering spaces that support recovery, reduce escalation and provide staff with environments that are easier to operate and keep safe. We use a methodology that combines evidence‑based design with practical, operational experience – ensuring environments are therapeutic, compliant and fully aligned to clinical models, workforce needs and local demand.

Mental Health Emergency Suite

Mental Health Emergency Suites must provide a calm, de‑escalating environment while delivering high levels of safety and clinical oversight for individuals in crisis. These suites often include triage spaces, safe rooms, de‑escalation rooms, observation areas and links to Section 136 facilities. Design considerations include anti‑ligature fixtures, clear sightlines, acoustic control, soft materials, secure flows and safe access for clinical staff. Health Spaces works closely with clinicians and estates teams to design trauma‑informed, non‑institutional environments that minimise risk while supporting compassionate crisis care. Our approach includes co‑design with front‑line staff, detailed safety planning, and delivery programmes that ensure continuity of emergency mental health services during construction.

Mental Health Inpatient Facility

Mental health inpatient facilities must create a safe, therapeutic, and recovery‑focused environment for patients with acute or long‑term mental‑health needs. These spaces require careful attention to ligature safety, privacy, daylight, sensory balance, social interaction opportunities, outdoor access and clear zoning between public, therapy and private areas. They must also support staff safety, observation and efficient workflows. Health Spaces designs inpatient facilities that prioritise dignity and therapeutic benefit, drawing on trauma‑informed principles, safe materials, secure structural detailing, therapeutic activity spaces and integrated outdoor environments. We work with Trusts to define the clinical model, ensure compliance with mental‑health safety guidance, and deliver new builds or refurbishments through highly controlled construction phases.

Mental Health Outpatient Facility

Mental Health Outpatient Facilities support a wide range of community‑based interventions including psychological therapies, psychiatry clinics, group work, family therapy and multidisciplinary support. These environments require acoustic privacy, discreet arrival spaces, calming interior palettes, secure reception areas and rooms that can flex between therapy modes. Wayfinding, lighting and sensory triggers must be carefully controlled to support comfort and reduce anxiety. Health Spaces designs mental‑health outpatient facilities that follow trauma‑informed principles, prioritise confidentiality and create warm, approachable environments that encourage engagement. We plan these spaces to support efficient clinician workflows and deliver upgrades or new builds with minimal disruption to ongoing community services.

Mental Health Clinic

Mental health clinics provide a more intimate setting for assessment, early intervention, talking therapies and routine reviews. These clinics demand strong acoustic isolation, safe interview room layouts, soft furnishings, and careful control of sightlines to entrances and exits to support safeguarding. They must feel approachable and non‑clinical while remaining safe for both patients and staff. Health Spaces designs these clinics using inclusive materials, warm tones and trauma‑informed spatial planning, ensuring they meet clinical safety standards while fostering a welcoming, community‑based atmosphere. We work with providers to develop flexible spaces that accommodate both one‑to‑one and small‑group interventions.
