Increasing capacity for urgent treatment
Urgent Treatment Centres and Same-Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services are key to urgent and emergency care provision.
This healthcare design and construction project was part of a wider strategic programme to increase patient capacity in the Emergency Department at Peterborough City Hospital.
Building a new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) was critical to ensuring the hospital could continue to provide an excellent level of emergency care for the community. The new space would ease the pressure in A&E, offering the opportunity for patient streaming at the front door and creating a better experience and outcome for patients.
A LIVE HOSPITAL SITE
The requirement for the new Urgent Treatment Centre came during the COVID pandemic. This meant that we had to be extremely vigilant when visiting and working at the site to ensure any risk of infection transmission was minimised.
The best location for the new Urgent Treatment Centre was chosen to be near the existing Emergency Department. The space would involve craning modular bays over two storeys of clinical space and lowered into the courtyard with no margin for error.

MODERN METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION (MMC)
Health Spaces worked closely with clinicians and estates teams through a detailed discovery phase to design an Urgent Treatment Centre that met both the clinical and nursing needs of the hospital, as well as supporting the long-term estate strategy of the Trust.
By utilising MMC, modular bays could be constructed away from the hospital, ensuring for minimal disruption for patients and staff at the live hospital site.
Once at the location, the modular bays were lifted into the courtyards for assembly in-situ. This followed a short installation phase before handover of the completed UTC to the hospital.
Health Spaces provided an end-to-end healthcare consultancy and management service, delivering a programme including design, off-site manufacture, on-site construction, mechanical & electrical, and fit out.
